Itasca: The Original State Park

This month’s adventure took us to the Mississippi Headwaters, Itasca State Park! Itasca is known as the “Original State Park” and was founded in 1891.

Starting out in Itasca

Itasca State Park is actually not too far from our home, about two hours. We missed the first entrance, but caught the second one and made our way to the Jacob V. Brower visitor center. Everyone who stays in one of the 45 overnight sites will check in here. Plan to stay and enjoy this visitor center that is packed with historical information, exhibits, pamphlets of the area, as well as a cute little gift shop. Once we checked in, we made our way down by Douglas Lodge, which is a full-service restaurant (this park has everything!) and parked in the lot off to the side. From there we made our trek which was between 3.5 to 4 miles down the Deer Park Trail, our destination was Back Pack Site 5 on McKay Lake.

The Campsite

The hike to the site is moderate, you do go up and down a lot of hills. There are two shelters along the way and you also will pass the trail that will bring you to the fire tower, which is an attraction that draws a lot of people in (we had the pup so we did not break off course to see this). Once you get to site number five, you go into the woods a bit and there it is, your secluded oasis for your trip. I do mean secluded, it is the only campsite on all of McKay Lake, you will, however, have the company of loons, trumpeter swans, and some pelicans.

 Itasca

We stayed for one night and enjoyed really being alone with nature. There is a tiny “beach” on the campsite that the dog loved diving into, however, there were leeches so you have to be very careful and make sure to check between their toes. We called it a night decently early, and the loons could be heard calling all night.

In the morning, we took a short hike around past McKay lake, made it back to camp and cooked up a quick breakfast. Then we were on our way to the other side of the sprawling, 32,000 acres park to the Mississippi Headwaters. We hiked back to the jeep and drove about 8 minutes to the Mary Gibbs Mississippi Headwaters Center. On the way, we did pass the Itasca Lake boat access which offers Kayak, paddle board, bike, canoe and other rentals.

The Headwaters

After passing a few historical sites in the park such as the Pioneer Cemetery and Preacher’s Grove, we came to a parking lot in front of a massive building, which is the Mary Gibbs Mississippi Headwaters Center. This visitor center has educational stops outside, a large gift shop with fresh fudge, as well as a cafeteria-style restaurant with hand scooped Blue Bunny ice cream. Once we made our way past all of these eye-catching things, you cross over a bridge and come to the Headwaters of the great Mississippi River.

Itasca State Park is truly a wonder of Minnesota, and you can tell why it is one of the most popular! We were there for one day, and while I feel we did so much, there is still so much more to do there! Two more interpretive exhibits: Forest Inn and the Picnic Area Museum, I definitely need to climb the fire tower, I love to Kayak and of course, there is about 35 miles more of trails I haven’t seen (Dr.Roberts Interactive Trail is a must). We will definitely be making a few more trips back to this park, and hope you make it part of your #ExploreMinnesota adventure!

George H. Crosby Manitou State Park

top of the falls at George H. Crosby Manitou State Park

It started out a long drive to get away from it all, up the North Shore to George H. Crosby Manitou State Park. We were on a mission to see a waterfall.

Arrival at the park

Once you get to the park, you really are away from it all. There is no cell service and the 21 campsites are only available if you hike in, the closest being 1.5 miles to the furthest being 4.5. You are not greeted by a ranger, but a self-service station at which you register your reservation.

We checked in, loaded up our packs and headed out on the Middle Trail. We had chosen site number three which is about a 2.5-mile hike. The Superior Hiking Trail runs through the park as well, so make sure you have your map and know what trail you need to take to get where. We got to a trail intersection at one point, and almost turned right too early, which would have taken us to an overlook instead of our site. We took a small break and studied the map, we kept on the correct trail and got to our site, which is after the cascades, nestled right along the Manitou River.

River view from site 3

Site number 3 is rather large and split into two sections. There is one part when you first walk in that has the campfire ring and a large space to pitch your tent, but not a view of the river; however if you go past that just a bit there is a second part of the site which has a wonderful view of the river and a large space to pitch your tent.

The waterfall

We set up camp and got back on the trail, we were on a mission to see the waterfall. Hiking to the cascades was muddy and steep, but worth it. The falls are truly a thing of wonder.

The hike back to camp was good and we spent the rest of our time enjoying the scenery. We love this park and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to escape the chaos of normal life and just enjoy the beauty of nature.

Affordable Backpacking Sleeping Bags for Camping

When on a budget, it is hard to find an affordable backpacking sleeping bag for camping or hiking. In this video, I compare 3 different sleeping bags that are very affordable.

Camping with Your Dog Top Three Helpful Items

Hey everybody, it’s Caroline here! Last week, Kory and I went on our first overnight camping stay with our dog, Mora. Let me tell you that was an adventure, one we realized wasn’t as easy as we thought it would be, so I decided to let you all know the top three items that really helped us out!

Top Three Things To Bring When Camping With Your Dog:

  1. The best thing we ever invested in for camping with your dog is hands down the waist leash. Being handsfree was awesome, and you can put it around a tree to have a tie out for when you are setting up camp. When we were hiking, it was nice to know I had Mora and be able to use both of my hands as well.
  2. The next spot on our list goes to food storage for your pup. Our set up is two stainless steel food storage containers. We take the large one and nestle the next largest in it, filled with Mora’s food, we use the largest for water when we get to where we are going!
  3. The last one is very important, and that is how you can protect your dog from the bugs! Certain biting bugs carry diseases that are harmful to our furry friends, not to mention they are just irritating and can ruin anyone’s good time. For Mora we use Nexgard, but there are other options, such as the Seresto Collar. They also make a natural bug spray for dogs that helps to keep the mosquitos away. Chews and collars usually only keep fleas and ticks away, but keeping mosquitos away is just as important.

Taking your dog camping with you is fun for both of you. Having a waist leash, food storage containers and bug protection for your pup are going to take the experience above and beyond for you both! With these three items, you and your dog will enjoy camping together for many years to come! What are your must-haves when you take your dog camping?  Leave them in the comments below!
